Using Disconnected Recordsets
Written by Eric Smith, Northstar Computer Systems LLC
If you're using COM or DCOM components in your ASP application, you often need to return a large amount of data. The alternatives for doing this include creating arrays or large, packed strings to do the job. ADO, however, allows you to return disconnected recordsets of data to your ASP code. You simply create a function in the object that has a return type of ADODB.Recordset, and when you're ready to return the recordset to the caller, Set the ActiveConnection property to Nothing. The CursorLocation has to be set to adUseClient, as well. If you don't do this, you'll get an error when you try to read any data after the recordset has been passed. This is an efficient and structured way to move data from a component to the ASP page without having to create a mapping system where array cell 1 equals the first field, and so on.
