New Timer Function
Written by Eric Smith, Northstar Computer Systems LLC
If you’ve ever wanted to time your scripts to make sure they don’t take too long, VBScript 5.0 has a new feature for you: the Timer function. This function returns the number of seconds that have elapsed since midnight, which lets you easily determine the length of time a chunk of code takes to execute. Here’s an example from the MSDN documentation on this new function:
Function TimeIt(N)
Dim StartTime, EndTime
StartTime = Timer
For I = 1 To N
Next
EndTime = Timer
TimeIt = EndTime - StartTime
End Function
This function will return the number of seconds it took to count from 1 to N. This can be helpful if you’re doing performance tuning on your application. Simply wrap checks of the Timer function around the code in question to get the amount of time it takes for it to execute.
