Defining Functions and Subroutines

Written by Eric Smith, Northstar Computer Systems LLC

When you are creating functions and subroutines in your ASP code, remember to define the routine before calling it. This may sound strange, but remember that ASP code is evaluated as it is read. If you use the trick of having all your code in subroutines, you can put a call at the end of your page to call "Sub Main", which can be defined anywhere in the file. The reason? The ASP engine has to read all the way to the end of the file to find the statement that calls the Main subroutine. This lets you arrange your code in whatever order you wish.
